Why Am I So Tired? 7 Things That Could Be Draining Your Energy

“I’m tired.”

How many times have you said those words lately?

Maybe you didn't sleep well. Maybe you've been working too much. Maybe life has simply been…life.

Maybe you spent hours chasing a chicken that hopped a ride on a hay trailer to another property!! (don't even ask...)

But what if you're not chasing chickens and are getting enough sleep and you're still tired?

Fatigue can have a lot of causes, and sometimes figuring out the reason isn't as simple as getting an extra hour of sleep. Your body is constantly giving you information, and persistent fatigue is one signal worth paying attention to.

Here are seven things that may be contributing to that “why am I so tired?” feeling.  We will dive into each of them further in the upcoming weeks.

1. You're not getting enough quality sleep

I know it sounds SO BASIC...BUT...It's not just about how many hours you're in bed. Your sleep needs to be restorative. I'm constantly telling patients "your body HEALS when you're sleeping".

Stress, an inconsistent sleep schedule, frequent waking, snoring, sleep apnea, alcohol, medications, and even an uncomfortable sleep environment can interfere with the quality of your sleep.

If you're routinely waking up tired despite getting what should be enough sleep, it may be worth looking into why.

2. You're carrying more stress than you realize

Your body doesn't stop responding to stress just because you aren't running from a tiger.

Work, family responsibilities, financial concerns, caregiving, and simply having too much on your plate can all keep your body in a state of increased alertness. (I'm helping with my aging Father with dementia...it's exhausting...emotionally and physically)

And eventually, that can leave you feeling completely worn out.

Sometimes the answer isn't “I need to push harder.”

Sometimes your body is asking for a break.

3. You're not giving your body the fuel it needs

Food is fuel—but what you eat matters.

Skipping meals, relying heavily on processed foods, eating too little protein or fiber, or simply not getting enough calories can leave you feeling sluggish.

A balanced diet that includes protein, fruits and vegetables, whole grains or other nutrient-dense carbohydrates, and healthy fats gives your body the raw materials it needs to function.

And don't forget water. Even mild dehydration can contribute to feeling tired. (This one is huge)

4. Your blood sugar may be riding a roller coaster

Ever have that afternoon crash where you suddenly feel like you could fall asleep sitting at your desk?

Large amounts of refined carbohydrates and sugary foods can cause rapid changes in blood glucose, which may leave some people feeling energetic for a while and then dragging later.

Building meals and snacks around protein, fiber, and nutrient-dense foods can help support steadier energy throughout the day. There are natural supplements that can help with this as well. Let's talk.

5. You may not be getting—or absorbing—certain nutrients

Iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and other nutrients all play important roles in normal body function.

A deficiency can sometimes contribute to fatigue, but here's the important part: you can't reliably diagnose a nutrient deficiency based on fatigue alone.

If you're persistently tired, your healthcare provider can determine whether bloodwork or other evaluation makes sense for you.

6. Hormones and your thyroid can affect energy

Hormonal changes can affect sleep, mood, metabolism, and energy.

Thyroid disorders are one example. Changes associated with perimenopause and menopause are another.

That doesn't mean every tired person has a hormone problem—but if fatigue is persistent or accompanied by other changes, it's worth bringing up with your healthcare provider.

7. Chronic fatigue is it a sign that something needs to be checked?

Persistent or unexplained fatigue shouldn't automatically be dismissed as “just getting older” or “being busy.”

Anemia, sleep apnea, infections, medication side effects, thyroid disorders, blood sugar problems, and other medical conditions can all contribute to fatigue. It could also be so many other things as well.

And that's why paying attention matters.

Your body isn't trying to annoy you. It's communicating with you.

Being tired after a long day—or even a long week—is part of being human.

But if you're constantly exhausted, if your fatigue is getting worse, or if it's interfering with your everyday life, don't simply accept it as your new normal.

Listen. Pay attention. And if something doesn't feel right, talk with your healthcare provider.

Because sometimes the question isn't:

“How can I push through this?”

It's:

“Why am I feeling this way?”

And that's a much better question to ask.  Let's start with that...I'm here to answer.
