When Life Knocks You Off Balance

Sometimes life has a funny way of reminding us that we are not always in control.
Last week, I got a pretty big reminder of that.
The roof collapsed at my office, and before I knew it, I was dealing with water, damaged equipment, soaked files, displaced staff and the headache of figuring out what comes next. It was frustrating, overwhelming, and definitely not something I had planned for.
And it got me thinking about balance.
We often think of balance as simply being able to stand on one foot or walk without stumbling. But balance is so much more than that. Our bodies are constantly working behind the scenes to keep us balanced—not just physically, but through our nervous system, our muscles, our joints, and even our ability to respond to stress.
And then life happens.
A stressful week. A sleepless night. An injury. Too much work. Not enough time to take care of ourselves. A family situation. An unexpected setback.
Our bodies feel those things.
We may tighten our shoulders without realizing it. Our neck and back can become tense. Our sleep can suffer. We may feel more tired, irritable, or simply “off.” Sometimes we keep pushing through because that's what we do.
I know I do.
But being strong doesn't mean pretending nothing affects us. Sometimes being strong means recognizing that you've been knocked off balance and giving yourself permission to get back on your feet.
That might mean taking a walk, getting some extra sleep, drinking more water, stretching, taking a few quiet minutes for yourself—or paying attention to that ache or stiffness you've been ignoring.
Your body is constantly communicating with you. The question is whether we're taking the time to listen.
The office will be repaired. The mess will eventually be cleaned up. We'll replace what was damaged and figure out the next steps.
And just like our homes and businesses sometimes need repair, our bodies do too.
So if life has knocked you a little off balance lately, don't beat yourself up for it.
Take a breath.
Take care of yourself.
And start finding your footing again—one small step at a time.
Because, getting knocked off balance isn't the failure. Staying there when you have the ability to begin again is the part we can change. I can help you stay balanced, for whatever comes next in your life.
